The heart is a muscular pump that pushes blood to the organs, tissues and body cells. This organ, which is barely larger than the size of your closed fist, provides the force that powers the cardiovascular system. In order to move blood through your heart, your heart chambers undergo alternating periods of relaxation (diastole) and contraction (systole), allowing the chambers to fill up with and plump blood, respectively. Blood delivers oxygen and nutrients to every cell and removes the carbon dioxide and waste products made by those cells. Blood is carried from your heart to the rest of your body through a complex network; the blood vessels, which include arteries, arterioles, capillaries, venules and veins, and are the portals and pathways through which blood travels in our body. Blood is returned to our heart through venules and veins.

Our cells and organs require oxygen to live. The blood is responsible for bringing the oxygen we breathe in from our lungs to the cells and organs that need it. In addition, the blood carries other important substances such as hormones and nutrients around our body and removes the waste that our cells produce. If all the vessels of this network in the body were laid end-to-end, they would extend for about 60,000 miles (more than 96,500 kilometers), which could encircle the earth twice.

The one-way circulatory system carries blood to all parts of the body. This process of blood flow within the body is called circulation. Arteries carry oxygen-rich blood away from the heart and veins carry oxygen-poor blood back to the heart. The vital role of the cardiovascular system in maintaining homeostasis depends on the continuous and controlled movement of blood through the thousands of miles of capillaries that permeate every tissue and reach every cell in the body. It is in the microscopic capillaries that blood performs its ultimate transport function. Nutrients and other essential materials pass from capillary blood into fluids surrounding the cells as waste products are removed.

When we breathe, oxygen passes through the walls of air sacs in our lungs and is picked up by our blood. Newly oxygenated blood travels along the pulmonary circuit to the heart, where it is pumped to other parts of the body via the systemic circuit. Once the blood reaches these other tissues, the oxygen it contains is released and exchanged for carbon dioxide. Deoxygenated blood is returned to the heart where it is pumped back to the lungs to drop off carbon dioxide and pick up oxygen, completing the cycle.

The average adult has approximately 5 liters of blood. Blood is made up of both liquid and solid components: the liquid portion is called plasma, while the solid portion consists of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.

Some Tips on How to Help Keep your Cardivascular System Healthy

  • Exercise regularly. Moderate physical activity, such as brisk walking for 30 minutes per day, can make a huge difference in one's cardiovascular health
  • Give up smoking. Smoking causes serious damage to your heart and blood vessels. Smokers are more at risk of dying from heart disease than cancer
  • Eat healthier and maintain a weight that is appropriate for your height and build. A healthy diet is one high in complex carbohydrates (such as whole grain foods), contains a good variety of fruits and vegetables and is low in saturated fat.

    DIRECTIONS:
Take 3 capsules 1 - 2 hours after breakfast daily. Follow with a glass of water.

    Serving size: 3 capsules

    Each serving contains:

Vitamin C (400 mg) Is extremely important as a regulator of high blood pressure. Vitamin C is an important antioxidant that is required for at least 300 metabolic functions and helps prevent the formation of free radicals, which initiate artery obstruction by damaging arterial walls. It also helps to heal the damaged areas before they fill with cholesterol. This vitamin also may reduce levels of low-density lipoproteins (LDL, the so-called "bad cholesterol"), while increasing levels of high-density lipoproteins (HDL, or "good cholesterol"), as well as helping to prevent arteriosclerosis. Essential in the formation of collagen, vitamin C protects against abnormal blood clotting and bruising. Vitamin C works synergistically with vitamin E and has an effect even greater than the sum of their individual results.

Coral Calcium (75 mg) Coral calcium, from Okinawa, Japan, is much more than just a source of calcium. It is a holistic mineral supplement that is rich in calcium and magnesium, but it contains more than 70 trace minerals that may be of value for general health. These minerals are very important in the proper functioning of the cardiac muscle and vital to a healthy heart and connected to over 300 enzyme actions controlling glucose, proteins and fats. Most effective when taken with vitamin B6, as a deficiency has been linked to heart disease.

Vitamin E (Natural Source) (200 IU) Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant which can help prevent abnormal blood clot formation. Supplementation of vitamin E may also inhibit platelet aggregation and help repair the lining of the blood vessels. Studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine suggests that vitamin E can contribute greatly to the prevention of heart disease in both men and women.

Vitamin B6 (as pyridoxine HCI) (20 mg) Researchers have found vitamin B6 to be a safe supplement which may be helpful in preventing heart attacks, strokes and atherosclerosis. Recent studies have shown that vitamins B6, B12 and folate (folic acid) can dramatically lower homocysteine, a free-radical generator capable of oxidizing cholesterol, of the major contributing factors in heart disease. The typical North American diet, however, leaves many people significantly deficient in these vital nutrients, especially vitamin B6. Harvard Medical School found that heart patients had nearly 80% less of vitamin B6 than healthy individuals did.

Folate (Folic Acid) (50 mcg) Folate is essential for the proper metabolism of homocysteine. Thus, folate supplementation can help prevent the arterial plaque buildup caused by an excess of homocysteine in the blood. Essential for blood formation, especially red and white blood cells.

Vitamin B12 (25 mcg) A deficiency of vitamin B12 is associated with elevated homocysteine levels, which is linked to heart disease. When vitamin B12 is supplemented, homocysteine levels decrease. This effect can be increased by also supplementing folate and B6 with vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 is essential for normal formation of red blood cells.

Zinc (20 mg) Zinc is a trace mineral that is found in virtually every cell in the body and is a component in over 200 enzymes (more than any other mineral), which are involved in speeding up the chemical reactions necessary for proper body functions. Adequate zinc levels are absolutely essential to good health. Zinc activates SOD (superoxide dismutase), an antioxidant enzyme that protects the cells. A study found that daily supplementation with a combination of antioxidants ( vitamin C, Vitamin E, selenium, citrus bioflavonoids) along with zinc lowered blood pressure.

Selenium (30 mcg) Selenium is a vital antioxidant, especially when taken with vitamin E. Selenium and vitamin E act synergistically to aid in the production of antibodies and to help maintain a healthy heart and liver. Selenium has show n good promise in the treatment of cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure. Selenium supplementation also reduces platelet aggregation, and is a cofactor for glutathione peroxidase, an important antioxidant enzyme.

Garlic Bulb (odorless) (300 mg) Garlic has the ability to stimulate cell healthy cell growth and activity, thus rejuvenating all body functions. It opens up blood vessels and helps to reduce hypertension (high blood pressure). Garlic Bulb is a health-building and disease preventing herb. It is rich in potassium, vitamins A and C, selenium and zinc.

Hawthorn Berry (120 mg) Regular use of hawthorn berries can strengthen heart muscles. This herb has been used preventing arteriosclerosis and in helping such conditions as heart valve defects, an enlarged heart, angina pectoris, and difficult breathing due to ineffective heart action and lack of oxygen in the blood. Many herbalists recommend hawthorn as a preventive herb - taking it can help combat diseases before actual symptoms are manifest.

Regular use of hawthorn can strengthen heart muscles. This herb has been traditionally used for preventing arteriosclerosis and in helping such conditions as heart valve defects, an enlarged heart, angina pectoris, and difficult breathing due to ineffective heart action and lack of oxygen in the blood. Many herbalists recommend hawthorn as a preventive herb - taking it can help combat diseases before actual symptoms are manifest. Hawthorn is the best known of the cardiac tonics, and possibly the most valuable tonic remedy for the cardiovascular system found in the plant kingdom. Following a four year study commissioned by the German Federal Ministry of Health, Hawthorn has gained full recognition as a heart remedy.

Hawthorn's monograph concludes that it gently increases the strength and normalizes the rhythm of the heartbeat, and it increases coronary and myocardial circulation through the dilation of the coronary artery. No toxicity, accumulation or habituation occur, thus it may be used over the long-term, achieving entirely safe results, especially in the elderly. Hawthorn can dilate vessels to the heart, thus improving blood flow to this vital organ. By dilating these vessels, hawthorn decreases vessel resistance and therefore lowers blood pressure. In addition, by improving oxygen utilization, the heart is more efficient and functions better, especially in individuals suffering from cardiovascular ailments. Finally, as an antioxidant, hawthorn is claimed to maintain the healthy collagen matrices of arterial walls so that the vessels remain elastic.

Citrus Bioflavonoids (50 mg) Although bioflavonoids are not true vitamins in the strictest sense, they are sometimes referred to as vitamin P and are essential for the absorption of vitamin C and the two should always be taken together. Bioflavonoids act synergistically with vitamin C to protect and preserve the structure of capillaries. In additional, bioflavonoids have an antibacterial effect and promote circulation, stimulate bile production, lower cholesterol levels and treat and prevent cataracts.

L-Carnitine (as Fumarate) (50 mg) L-carnitine helps increase the use of fat as an energy source, preventing fatty build-up, especially in the heart, liver and skeletal muscles. L-carnitine helps to lessen the risk of heart disorders. Studies have shown that damage to the heart from cardiac surgery can be reduced by treatment with L-carnitine. It has the ability to lower blood triglyceride levels and L-carnitine also enhances the effectiveness of the antioxidant vitamins E and C.

Lycopene (10 mg) Researchers have found a statistically significant association between lycopene supplementation and a lower risk of heart disease. This red carotene has been shown to be extremely protective against several diseases by neutralizing harmful oxygen free radicals before they can do damage to cellular structures. In a detailed study by Harvard researchers, they discovered that men who consumed lycopene daily, showed a significant decrease of prostate cancer.
