this page! Minimizing Free
Radical Damage with Antioxidants
Free radicals are molecules that can
harm healthy cells in the body. While the production of
some free radicals in our body is considered normal, excessive
free radical production can lead to many ill health effects
and the acceleration of the aging process.
Free radicals are produced in many different ways. Our normal
metabolic processes, ultraviolet radiation from the sun, harmful
substances present in the environment, and the breakdown in
the body of unhealthy or rancid fats are some of the more common
culprits of excessive free radical production.
While it is impossible to totally avoid most of the root causes
of free radical production, it is possible to minimize the
negative effects free radicals have on our health by supplementing
our diets with an effective antioxidant
supplement. A full spectrum antioxidant complex can
dramatically minimize the damage free radicals can cause, helping
us to slow the aging process and protect us from developing
some of the many different types of deleterious health conditions
that excessive free radical production can contribute to.
The existence of free radicals in the body is a fairly recent
discovery that has led to a greater understanding of why our
cells degrade over time. A wide body of research has shown that
the accumulated damage caused by free radicals is a major
cause of our natural aging processes, as well as being a
major contributor in the development of many different types
of diseases.
Oxidized lipids, sugars, enzymes and other proteins such as
DNA cannot perform their normal function and may even become
harmful. For example, damaged DNA may provide the wrong genetic
code leading to unregulated protein synthesis and/or cell growth
that results in cancer. Many other types of diseases where free
radicals have been implicated as major contributing factors
may be preventable by ensuring the body is provided with healthy
levels of antioxidants.
How Free Radicals Damage Our Bodies
The biochemical effects of free radicals
are fairly simple to explain. Atoms are composed of a positively
charged nucleus and negatively charged electrons. Electrons
orbit around the nucleus in pairs and each pair has its own
region of space. When an electron from a pair is removed, the
molecule becomes very unstable and reacts with surrounding molecules.
A free radical is any chemical species which is capable of an
independent but extremely short existence with one or more unpaired
electrons. Once a free radical is produced it frantically
seeks out other electrons in order to pair its unpaired
electrons. Because most of the molecules in our body do not
have unpaired electrons, free radicals steal electrons from
normal molecules, damaging them in the process. This process
is called oxidation.

The Health Benefits of Antioxidants
Antioxidants are the substances that
eliminate free radicals by interacting with them chemically,
usually by donating an electron to stabilize the free radical.
Healthy antioxidant activity within the body protects us
from the damaging effects of oxidative damage from free
radicals. It is also important to note that a number of chronic
disease states have been associated with free radical induced
oxidative damage, including cancer, heart
disease, suppressed
immune function and accelerated aging.
A multiple source antioxidant formulation is much more effective
than any singular antioxidant supplement, chiefly because
of the beneficial cooperative interaction that can be observed
when several different types of antioxidant nutrients are combined.
Every antioxidant has its own properties and affects the body
in different ways. Some antioxidant compounds are more effective
for the circulatory system, others are more useful in promoting
better neurotransmission, while others are much more effective
at slowing the aging process. This illustrates why it is
so important to combine several different effective sources
of antioxidants in a balanced manner to ensure a broad spectrum
of action.

Antioxidants are Highly Recommended for:
Prevention of Cardiovascular Conditions
Helps prevent free radical accumulation
within blood vessels, promoting the integrity of vessel walls.
Helps dilate blood vessels and increase blood flow. Supports
circulation in the extremities and the capillaries that feed
the eyes and lungs. Helps lower arterial pressure and reduces
the visibility of blood vessels within the eyes, and the appearance
of varicose veins and rosacea.
Cancer Prevention Cancer
may start when oxidation has become so excessive that the
cells have degenerated beyond physiological control. The body
becomes so overwhelmed with toxins that it automatically sets
up a natural defense in the form of a tumor mass to harbor
these poisons and remove them from general activity within
the body.
Problem and Aging Skin
Observed
to be beneficial in cases of psoriasis.
Improves skin elasticity and smoothness
Prevention of Degenerative Conditions
Studies show that joint degeneration
can be linked to excessive free radical activity.
Cataracts
As
it is developed partly as a result of oxidation of proteins
in the lens of the eye, some studies have shown that antioxidants
might be effective in reducing age-related macular degeneration
and resulting vision loss.
Heart Disease Prevention (Arteriosclerosis and High LDL Cholesterol
Levels)
Indicated
for those with arteriosclerosis and bad cholesterol problems
such as a high level of LDL (low-density lipoprotein). LDL
damages the lining of the arteries when it becomes oxidized.
Allergy sufferers
A
low oxidation process within the body can be a cause or major
contributing factor in many different types of allergies.
Low oxidation can cause affected individuals to be abnormally
sensitive to certain foreign substances entering the body.
Individuals with an Unbalanced
Diet
At least 7 servings of fruits and vegetables
per day can provide adequate levels of antioxidants. As this
is very difficult for most people, antioxidant supplementation
is a suitable alternative as a preventive health measure.
Smokers and those that consume
more than moderate amounts of alcohol
It's
recommended that these individuals regularly supplement their
diets with antioxidants to achieve a higher level of free
radical protection.
The Importance of Regular Antioxidant Supplementation
Regular consumption of a full
spectrum antioxidant supplement helps strengthen the body's
immune system by minimizing the constant damage caused by
free radicals. This intervention allows the body's immune system
to recharge itself by allowing the body's processes time to
heal and strengthen, improving the body's innate long-lasting
ability to moderate the harmful effects of oxidation damage.
Significant feelings of well-being should appear within two
weeks of regular consumption of a balanced antioxidant supplement.
However, it may take up to 2-6 weeks to observe marked improvements
in specific conditions and their accompanying symptoms, as the
damage caused by excessive oxidization can be inflicted over
a long period of time.
