Rosemary Leaf
Rosemary Leaves
Botanical Name: Rosmarinus officinalis
Rosemary is an herb from the mint family that contains powerful
antioxidants. Rosemary's constituents exhibit therapeutic benefits
with regards to respiratory
conditions, asthma, peptic ulcers, prostate disorders, inflammatory
diseases, liver
toxicity, atherosclerosis, circulatory problems, ischemic
heart disease, cataracts and poor sperm motility.
As an herbal medicine rosemary may also improve memory, relieve
muscle pain and stimulate the circulatory and nervous systems.
Rosemary contains substances that are useful for stimulating
the immune
system, increasing circulation, and improving
digestion. Rosemary also contains anti-inflammatory compounds
and has traditionally been used to help reduce the severity
of asthma attacks and relieving bronchial congestion. In addition,
rosemary has been shown in some studies to increase the blood
flow to the head and brain, which may improve concentration
and memory.
Rosemary contains a variety of volatile oils, flavonoids (including
apigenin, diosmetin, and luteolin), and phenolic acids, including
the phenolic acid named after rosemary, rosmarinic acid.
Rosemary leaf contains beneficial phenolic components such as
rosmarinic, chlorogenic acid, and caffeic acids, and a host
of health-promoting flavonoids that possess strong antioxidant
properties. The terpenoids in rosemary, such as rosmarinic
acid, rosmanol, carnosol and ursolic acid provide effective
anti-inflammatory benefits, while ursolic acid has been theorized
to possess some anti-tumor properties.
Rosmarinic acid is a phenolic component that can be readily
assimilated from the GI tract. Once inside the body it acts
to decrease inflammatory responses by changing the concentrations
of inflammatory messaging molecules (such as leukotriene B4).
The rosmarinic acid within rosemary also functions as a wide-ranging
antioxidant.
Rosemary has been a prized natural medicine for thousands of
years and has been used to:
promote increased blood and lymph flow
help dilate the bronchial tubes and dispel excess mucous
stimulate the circulatory and nervous systems
help fight free
radical damage, inflammation, bacteria and fungi
detoxify
the liver and has been theorized to possess anti-tumor
properties
Rosemary is high in calcium and contains magnesium, iron, manganese,
phosphorus, potassium, zinc, and vitamin
B1, vitamin
B3 and vitamin
C.
