Niacin is needed as a coenzyme in the
production of energy. Niacin is essential to help maintain the
health of skin, nerve tissue and the digestive
system. Niacin is critical to processes involving energy
and lipid metabolism. This vitamin is well known because of
its impressive, but not harmful, vasodilator or flushing effect
(with temporary redness and hot flashes) in increasing blood
flow to the extremities (arm, legs and head, principally). This
effect comes only from the nicotinic acid form (called niacin)
not the amide (niacinamide).
Helps reduces the cholesterol level in
the blood, lowering LDL (bad cholesterol) and triglycerides,
while increasing HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol)
Recommended Daily Value:
20mg
The amount of vitamins and minerals as set by the RDA only provides
us with the bare minimum required to ward off common vitamin
deficiency diseases such as beriberi, rickets, scurvy and night
blindness. Water soluble vitamins, such as vitamin C, B and
folic acid, must be replenished daily and have been shown to
exhibit numerous positive health effects when taken in amounts
that are greater than the recommended daily allowance.
- If you are pregnant or nursing do not take any form of vitamin
supplement unless you have discussed its use with your doctor.
